In postwar Sarajevo, single mother Esma is forced to work as a waitress in a gangster-run club in order to supplement the government aid she needs to raise defiant adolescent daughter Sara. They argue over many things, including the truth about Sara's father, whom she believes died fighting for Bosnia.
