Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist ★★½ 2005 (R)

Paul Schrader's dark and intensely serious horror movie about demon-possession gone wrong. Released less because of the interest in another “Exorcist” spin-off, but more in hopes of cashing in on the curiosity to see such an unusual studio maneuver. This “prequel” disappointed the Morgan Creek execs, who then decided to reshoot the entire movie with a new director and a few new actors. That movie became “Exorcist: The Beginning.” With nothing to lose, the studio plunked in some CGI and released their original investment under this slightly different title. It's better than their reshoot, and makes for a fascinating experiment when paired up scene-for- scene with “The Beginning.” 116m/C DVD . US Stellan Skarsgard, Gabriel Mann, Clara Bellar, Andrew French, Israel Adurama, Eddie Osei, Antoine Kamerling, Julian Wadham, Ilario Bisi-Pedro; D: Paul Schrader; W: William Wisher, Caleb Carr; C: Vittorio Storaro; M: Trevor Rabin, Angelo Badalamenti, Dog Fashion Disco.
