A Day Without a Mexican ★★½ Un Dia Sin Mexicanos 2004 (R)

One morning, the state of California wakes up to find the entire Latino population has disappeared. The consequences are huge. Fields remain unharvested, cars are abandoned, schools are closed and the poor Anglos are left holding the bag. Without cheap laborers and migrant workers, the economy falls into a hopeless shambles. The lone Latino survivor is Lila Rodriguez (Arizmendi, who also co-scripted), a reporter who becomes the center of intense scrutiny. Amusingly shot as a mockumentary, but what could have been a biting critique suffers from lack of focus and overly broad scope. 97m/C VHS, DVD . US MX Yareli Arizmendi, John Getz, Maureen Flannigan, Muse Watson, Caroline Aaron, Melinda Allen, Eduardo Palomo, Bru Muller; D: Sergio Arau; W: Yareli Arizmendi, Sergio Arau, Sergio Guerrero; C: Alan Caudillo; M: Juan J. Colomer.
