Clean and Sober ★★★½ 1988 (R)

A drug addict hides out at a rehabilitation clinic and actually undergoes treatment. A serious, subtle, and realistic look at the physical/emotional detoxification of an obnoxious, substanceabusing real estate broker; unpredictable and powerful without moralizing. Keaton is fine in unsympathetic lead, with both Baker and Freeman excelling in lesser roles. Not for all tastes, but it's certainly a worthwhile work. Caron, creator of TV's “Moonlighting,” debuts here as director. 124m/C VHS, DVD . Michael Keaton, Kathy Baker, Morgan Freeman, M. Emmet Walsh, Claudia Christian, Pat Quinn, Ben Piazza, Brian Benben, Luca Bercovici, Tate Donovan, Henry Judd Baker, Mary Catherine Martin; D: Glenn Gordon Caron; W: Tod Carroll; C: Jan Kiesser; M: Gabriel Yared. Natl. Soc. Film Critics ’88: Actor (Keaton).
