Anchors Aweigh ★★★ 1945

Snappy big-budget (for then) musical about two horny sailors, one a girl-happy dancer and the other a shy singer. While on leave in Hollywood they return a lost urchin to his sister. The four of them try to infiltrate a movie studio to win an audition for the girl from maestro Iturbi. Kelly's famous dance with Jerry the cartoon Mouse (of “Tom and Jerry” fame) is the second instance of combining live action and animation. The young and handsome Sinatra's easy crooning and Grayson's near operatic soprano are blessed with music and lyrics by Styne and Cahn. Lots of fun, with conductor-pianist Iturbi contributing and Hollywood-style Little Mexico also in the brew. ♫We Hate to Leave; I Fall in Love Too Easily; The Charm of You; The Worry Song; Jalousie; All of a Sudden My Heart Sings; I Begged Her; What Makes the Sun Set?; Waltz Serenade. 139m/C VHS, DVD . Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly, Kathryn Grayson, Jose Iturbi, Dean Stockwell, Carlos Ramirez, Pamela Britton, Sharon McManus, Leon Ames; D: George Sidney; M: Jule Styne, Sammy Cahn. Oscars '45: Scoring/Musical.
