Alex in Wonderland ★★½ 1970 (R)

A semi-autobiographical and satirical look at Hollywood from the standpoint of a young director who's trying to follow up his recent hit (in real life, “Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice”) with a picture of some integrity that will keep the mass audience away. The confused plot provides obvious parallels to Fellini (who appears in a cameo) and some sharp, often bitter insights into the Hollywood of the early '60s. Strong performances by Sutherland and Burstyn compensate somewhat for the patience-trying self-indulgent arty whining of the script. 109m/C VHS . Donald Sutherland, Ellen Burstyn, Paul Mazursky; Cameos: Jeanne Moreau, Federico Fellini; D: Paul Mazursky; W: Larry Tucker, Paul Mazursky.
