Sucher, Rosa (1847–1927)

German operatic soprano. Born Rosa Hasselbeck (also seen as Haslbeck) in Germany in 1847 (some sources cite 1849); died in 1927; married Josef Sucher (a conductor-composer known for his interpretation of Wagnerian music), in 1876.

Rosa Sucher was born Rosa Hasselbeck in Germany in 1847. Following her marriage to Josef Sucher, a conductor-composer renowned for his interpretation of Wagnerian music, she became famous for her performances in Wagner's operas, while two seasons in London (1882, 1892) showed off her talent both as a singer and an actress. She also sang in Hamburg (1879–88) and at Bayreuth (1886, 1888). In her later years, she appeared principally on the opera stages of Berlin, before retiring in 1903. Rosa Sucher is remembered especially for her portrayal of Isolde.
