Trained as a dancer, Polish-born actress Anny Ondra began her career in 1919, in the Czechoslovakian film Woman with Small Feet, and quickly gained popularity in both comic and serious roles. During the 1920s, she formed a production company with director-producer Karel Lamac, whom she also married. Ondra made a number of films under Lamac's direction, and also gave a memorable performance in Alfred Hitchcock's early talkie Blackmail (1929), although her heavily accented voice had to be dubbed. Ondra divorced Lumac in 1933, to marry boxer Max Schmeling.
