King, Jessie Marion (1875–1949)

Scottish artist and graphic designer . Born in New Kilpatrick, Scotland, in 1875; died in Kirkcudbright, Scotland, in 1949; attended the Glasgow School of Art; married E.A. Taylor (an artist).

Associated with the British version of Art Nouveau, Jessie Marion King was trained at the Glasgow School of Art and developed a style strongly influenced by Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868–1928), a Scottish architect and designer who was at the forefront of modernism. King produced watercolors, wallpaper, jewelry, and tile and textile designs which she actively exhibited, from 1897 to 1940, at the Royal Scottish Academy, the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, and Bruton Galleries. In 1902, she won a gold medal for her drawings and watercolors at the Turin International Exhibition of Modern Decorative Art. Jessie King authored several books, and also produced book illustrations and jacket designs. The artist was married to E.A. Taylor and lived in Paris and Scotland.
