Haley, Margaret A. (1861–1939)

American educator. Born Margaret Angela Haley in Joliet, Illinois, on November 15, 1861; died in Chicago, Illinois, on January 5, 1939; attended public and convent schools.

A prominent figure in Chicago politics from 1900 to the mid-1930s, Margaret A. Haley was a dynamic leader and vice-president of the Chicago Teacher's Federation. She was president of the National Federation of Teachers in 1902 and instrumental in securing election of Ella Flagg Young as superintendent of Chicago schools (1910). Her autobiography Battleground (edited by Robert L. Reid, University of Illinois Press) was published in 1982.
