Anderson, Ernestine (1928—)

American jazz singer. Born in Houston, Texas, on November 11, 1928.

Starting out in the 1940s with the bands of Russell Jacquet and Johnny Otis, Ernestine Anderson had her first hit in 1947 while singing with Shifty Henry's band. She then worked with Lionel Hampton (1952–53) and recorded with Gigi Gryce (1955). While on a 1956 tour of Sweden with Rolf Ericson's group, Anderson recorded "Hot Cargo" with Harry Arnold's band. Three years later, she was named New Star in Downbeat's critic's poll. After that, little was heard of Anderson for a decade, except her voice on the soundtrack of Sidney Poitier's movie The Lost Man. She had moved to England in 1965, returning in 1976 to sign with Concord Records. Her albums include: Hot Cargo (1958), Live from Concord to London (1976), Hello Like Before (1976), Never Make Your Move Too Soon (1980), and Be Mine Tonight. In 1984, with her own quartet, she recorded the album When the Sun Goes Down.
