Sexburga (c. 627–673)
Sexburga (c. 627–673)
Queen of Wessex. Name variations: Seaxburg; Seaxburh; Sexburh. Born around 627; died in 673; married Kenwealh, also seen as Coinwalch or Cenwalh, king of West Saxons or Wessex (r. 643–672).
Sexburga, who succeeded her husband Cenwalh after his death, reigned as queen of Wessex from 672 to 673. She was said to have been a "woman of courage," and of a "subtle and extensive genius," but she was deposed because her nobles refused to obey the orders of a woman.
