Pisano, Nicola (fl. 1278)

Italian sculptor. Flourished in 1278 in Perugia; married Giovanni Pisano.

A sculptor of Perugia in Italy, Nicola Pisano worked with her husband Giovanni. One of their projects was a beautifully carved fountain, still in existence, commissioned by the town and finished in 1278. The Pisanos must have been experienced and well-respected artists to be given such an important commission, but nothing else is known about them. It was not unusual in the Middle Ages for urban couples to work together professionally; indeed, the family was the primary unit of labor at the time.
