Newcomb, Ethel (1875–1959)

American pianist. Born in Whitney Point, New York, in 1875; died in Whitney Point, New York, on July 3, 1959.

Ethel Newcomb studied in Vienna with Theodor Leschetizky from 1895 to 1903. While there, she performed concertos with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. Leschetizky kept her on as his assistant from 1904 through 1908, and eventually she wrote an interesting memoir about her teacher and colleague. At her 1904 London debut, she performed concertos by Schumann, Chopin, and Saint-Saëns under the baton of Richard Strauss. The bulk of her career took place in the United States.
