McCracken, Esther Helen (1902–1971)

English actress and playwright. Name variations: Esther McCracken. Born Esther Helen Armstrong, June 25, 1902, in Newcastle-on-Tyne, England; died Aug 9, 1971; m. Angus McCracken (died in action in WWII, 1943); m. Mungo Campbell.

Acted with the Newcastle Rep (1924–37); wrote such plays as The Willing Spirit, Quiet Wedding Quiet Weekend (which had over 1,000 performances), Living Room, White Elephants, Cry Liberty and No Medals (1944); with Patrick Kirwan, adapted Dodie Smith's Dear Octopus for the screen (1943).
