Lovell, Maria Anne (1803–1877)

English actress and dramatist. Name variations: Mrs. Lovell. Born Maria Anne Lacy in 1803; died in 1877; married George William Lovell (1804–1878, a dramatist), in 1830.

Maria Anne Lovell made her stage debut in 1818 and appeared at Covent Garden in 1822. Following her retirement from the stage, she turned to playwriting. Ingomar the Barbarian was produced at the Drury Lane in 1851, a role that would bring success to Mary Anderson (1859–1940) over 30 years later. Maria Lovell also wrote The Beginning of the End which was performed at the Haymarket in 1855.
