A Cappadocian, Irene of Constantinople became a nun rather than marry Michael III, emperor of Byzantium. Known as Michael the Drunkard, he went on to marry Eudocia Decapolita . Irene became abbess of the great Chrysobalanton convent in Constantinople, and an important cult flourished around her. She became famous for her prophecies, levitations, and miracles.
