Greatorex, Eliza (1820–1897)

American artist. Born Eliza Pratt in Ireland on December 25, 1820; died in 1897; married Henry W. Greatorex (a composer and organist), in 1849.

Eliza Greatorex was born Eliza Pratt in Ireland on December 25, 1820, and arrived in New York in 1840. After studying there and in Paris, she produced many landscape paintings but later devoted herself to etching and pen-and-ink work, for which she is chiefly remembered. In 1869, she drew a series of historic buildings and scenes in and around New York. Her publications include The Homes of Oberammergau, Summer Etchings in Colorado, and Old New York from the Battery to Bloomingdale. In 1868, Greatorex was elected associate of the National Academy.
