Fisher, Mary (c. 1946–)
American AIDS activist. Born Mary Fisher in Detroit, Michigan, c. 1946; dau. of Max Fisher (industrialist and philan-thropist); m. Brian Campbell (div.); children: (adopted) Zachary; Max (b. 1988).
Was in her early 40s when she learned that she had contracted AIDS from ex-husband who had recently died (1991); a wealthy Republican, had a great deal of cachet when she spoke before the Republican National Convention (1992), exhorting the nation to stop stigmatizing those who find themselves HIV positive; published Sleep with the Angels, a compilation of 25 of her speeches, I'll Not Go Quietly (1995) and My Name Is Mary (1996).
