Ehrmann, Marianne (1755–1795)

Swiss journalist, novelist and editor. Name variations: Marianne Brentano Ehrmann. Born Marianne Brentano, Nov 25, 1755, in Rapperswil, Switzerland; died Aug 14, 1795, in Stuttgart, Germany; dau. of Franz Xaver Brentano (buyer) and Sebastiana Antonia Corti; niece of Dominik Brentano; briefly married, c. 1777; m. Theophil Friedrich Ehrmann (jurist and writer), 1781.

Worked as governess and actress; helped husband run journal and began publishing poems and fiction in magazines; writings, which challenge traditional notions of womanhood, include Amalie, eine wahre Geschichte in Briefen (2 vols, 1787), and Antonie von Warnstein: Eine Geschichte aus enserem Zeitalter (2 vols, 1796–98); founded women's magazines, Amaliens Erholungsstunden and Die Einsiedlerin aus den Alpen.
