Collins, Martha Layne (1936–)
American politician. Born Martha Layne Hall, Dec 7, 1936, in Bagdad, Kentucky; graduate of University of Kentucky; m. Dr. Bill L. Collins (dentist who was convicted on charges of extortion).
Taught school until 1970; served as clerk of the state Supreme Court (1978–79); a Democrat, served as lieutenant governor (1979–83); was the 1st woman to serve as governor of Kentucky (1983–87), and the 3rd woman in US to be elected governor in her own right; chaired the Democratic National Convention (1984); served as president of St. Catharine College for 6 years.
