William Pepper
William Pepper
1843-1898
American physician who pioneered the formation of university hospitals. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Pepper served as a physician at Philadelphia hospitals, lectured, wrote medical texts, and was the curator of local medical collections. He helped plan and raise funds for the University of Pennsylvania hospital, then the prototype for clinical teaching in American. As that university's provost, Pepper supported curriculum reforms and set educational standards adopted nationally.
