Pierre Paul Émile Roux

1853-1933

French physician and bacteriologist who contributed to the development of the modern germ theory of disease while working with Louis Pasteur (1822-1895). Roux worked on vaccines for anthrax and rabies. Experiments conducted by Roux and Alexandre Yersin (1863-1943) demonstrated that the diphtheria bacillus produced a toxin that could by itself cause the disease. Roux was also involved in the development of an antitoxic serum for the prevention and treatment of tetanus.
