Hanna Neumann

1914-1971

German mathematician who developed theories concerning pure mathematics. Neumann earned an Oxford University doctorate, focusing on group theory problems. She lectured at Hull University and conducted research at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. In 1963 she became head of the Department of Pure Mathematics at Australian National University. Neumann was founding vice president of the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers. She devised abstract mathematical puzzles that required comprehension of mathematical laws and logic to achieve solutions.
