Ali Rabban al-Tabari

d. 870

Arab physician and teacher of ar-Razi (Rhazes; c. 865-923) whose Firdous al-hikmat (The paradise of wisdom), c. 850, established the foundations of Islamic medicine. The seven-volume encyclopedia, which was the first major work to bring together disparate branches of medical science, discusses the organs, diet, a wide variety of diseases, and numerous other topics.
