Triticum (wheat; family Gramineae) A genus of domesticated grasses that yields wheat, the most important cereal crop of temperate regions. The ancestry of the cultivated wheats is uncertain but they are believed to be derived from T. monococcum (einkorn wheat), native to the eastern Mediterranean region. The widely cultivated species include T. aestivum (bread wheat) and T. durum (durum wheat, used to make pasta).
