Chironemidae (kelpfish; subclass Actinopterygii, order Perciformes) A family of marine coastal fish. Because of the high-backed body profile, and the lower pectoral ray tips projecting free from the fin membrane, the kelpfish resemble the morwongs (family Cheilodactylidae) but have a truncate tail fin and fewer (less than nine) soft anal-fin rays. Their somewhat marbled colour pattern allows them to hide easily in shallow rocky areas. There are about four species, found in temperate waters around the Tasman Sea.
