Bischofia (family Staphyleaceae) A monotypic genus (B. javanica) of trees, formerly placed incorrectly in the Euphorbiaceae, that have stipulate, spiral, pinnate leaves composed of 3–5-serrate leaflets. They are dioecious, the flowers being apetalous, and having 5 sepals, 5 stamens, and a trilocular (see LOCULE) ovary with 2 pendulous ovules. The fruits are leathery or fleshy, and indehiscent. The trees yield useful timber. They are native in Georgia (Colchic forest), eastern to central China, Malesia, and the Pacific islands.
