LEWI, MAURICE J.

LEWI, MAURICE J. (1857–1957), U.S. physician and educator. Lewi held several positions in his native Albany as physician and educator, including that of professor of medical jurisprudence at the Albany Law School, before becoming secretary of the New York State Board of Medical Examiners in 1892, a position he held until 1913. In that same year, he became first president of the First Institute of Podiatry in New York City. The institute became the Long Island University College of Podiatry in 1948 and the New York College of Podiatry in 1955. Lewi edited Text Book of Chiropody (1914); Surgery, With Special Reference to Podiatry (1917); Practical Podiatry (1918); and Foot Orthopaedics (1927).
