ALATON, ISHAK

ALATON, ISHAK (1927– ), industrialist. Born in Istanbul, Alaton graduated from Lycée Saint-Michel in 1946. After his military service he worked in Sweden in 1951–53 as an engineering trainee. In 1954 he founded the Alarko Company together with his associate Üzeyir *Garih. Over a period spanning some 50 years Alarko Holdings has grown into a group of 22 independent companies working in the fields of contracting in Turkey and abroad, building and operating hydroelectric and thermal power plants and airconditioning equipment, as well as operating in the fields of tourism and real estate development. Alaton was honored by the King of Sweden in 1993 with the Nordstjaernan (North Star) first degree. He is the vice chairman of the board of tesev (Turkish Economic and Social Studies Foundation), a non-government organization, and honorary consul of the Republic of South Africa. His Görüş ve Öneriler was published in 2000.
