Misl (Arab., ‘alike’, ‘file’, ‘record’). Late 18th-cent. band of Sikh fighters. Traditionally twelve misls emerged in the mid-18th-cent., following the confusion after Bandā Siṅgh's death, to defend Pañjāb from Afghan attacks.
