San Gabriel Mountains
San Gabriel Mountains, S Calif., E and NE of Los Angeles, running c.50 mi (80 km) westward from Cajon Pass. Mt. San Antonio, also known as Mt. Baldy (10,080 ft/3,072 m), is the highest peak of the range, which also includes Mt. Wilson, site of the Mount Wilson Observatory. Citrus fruits are raised in the southern foothills. The San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, 346,177 acres (140,093 hectares), est. 2014, is located in the N and central sections of the range, and lies almost entirely within the Angeles National Forest. Most of the mountains' highest peaks are in the national monument.
