Khandwa (kŭnd´və), city (1991 pop. 145,133), Madhya Pradesh state, central India. Khandwa is a district administrative center and a market for cotton, timber, and grain. There are cotton gins, sawmills, and oilseed mills. The town is believed by some authorities to be the city of Kognabanda mentioned by the ancient Hellenistic geographer Ptolemy. During the 12th cent. it was a center of Jainism. Several colleges in the town are affiliated with Saugar Univ.
