Irazú

Irazú (ēräsōō´), active volcano, c.11,260 ft (3,430 m) high, central Costa Rica, E of San José. A massive volcano, Irazú erupted in 1723, destroying Cartago, and since then it has erupted at least 20 times. Its 1963–65 eruption at times covered San José, Costa Rica's capital, with ash. Vapor constantly rises from one of its craters. From the summit can be seen the Pacific Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and Lake Nicaragua. Turrialba volcano is to the east-northeast.
