Beatrice name given by Dante of Chancery in Vita nuova and The Divine Comedy to the woman with whom he had fallen in love at his first sight of her; in The Divine Comedy she is his guide for his spiritual journey. While her identity is not certainly known, she is generally identified with Bice Portinari, who married Simone de' Bardi and died in 1290.

Beatrice is also the name of the spirited heroine of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing (1598–9).
