Wollongong City-port in New South Wales, Australia, 65km (40mi) s of Sydney. Settled in 1815, Wollongong became a major exporter of grain and coal, and a large iron and steel centre. Port Kembla has Australia's biggest steelworks. Other industries: chemicals, textiles, copper. Pop. (1996 est.) 262,600.

There are other industries, including copper refining and textile and chemical manufacturing. Port Kembla, which was absorbed by Wollongong in 1947, is a major port. The Univ. of Wollongong is there.
