The 6th degree of the major scale, according to the system of vocal syllables derived from Guido d'Arezzo (see hexachord), and so used (spelt lah) in tonic sol-fa, in which it is also the 1st degree of the minor scale. In many countries, however, the name has become attached (on ‘fixed-doh’ principles) to the note A, in whatever key this may occur.
