Mendoza, Carlos Antonio (1856–1916)

Carlos Antonio Mendoza (b. 1856; d. 1916), Panamanian lawyer and politician and author of Panama's declaration of independence. He headed the radical wing of the Liberal Party. A mulatto, he was very popular with the lower classes. Mendoza served as deputy to the National Assembly and was a member of the Panama City Council. He was also president of the national directorate of the Liberal Party. In 1910 he occupied the presidency for seven months after the death of President José Domingo Obaldía and prior to Pablo Arosemena, who completed Obaldía's term.
