International Republican Institute

The International Republican Institute (IRI) is a nonprofit organization funded by the U.S. Congress through the National Endowment for Democracy and the U.S. Agency for International Development. Founded in 1983 and with close ties to the Republican Party, the IRI works worldwide to strengthen democratic institutions and practices. In Latin America, the IRI has carried out programs in up to ten countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, and Venezuela) that include party strengthening and leadership training, election monitoring, ministry coordination, civic education, and promotion of ethics in government. The IRI, like its democratic party counterpart NDI, was established as a non-partisan organization. In the Latin American countries where it works, like NDI, partisan political criteria are not applied. Country selection is allocated to ensure roughly equal representation by either IRI or NDI.
