Gutiérrez González, Gregorio (1826–1872)

Gregorio Gutiérrez González (b. 9 May 1826; d. 6 July 1872), Colombian poet considered the bard of his native Antioquia. After studying law in Bogotá, Gutiérrez held various judicial and legislative posts in Antioquia and represented the province in Congress. As a poet he is remembered partly for his romantic lyrics, such as the two poems entitled "A Julia" and the nostalgic and melancholy "Aures." His major literary achievement, however, is the Memoria científica sobre el cultivo del maíz en Antioquia, first published in 1866. A celebration of rural life in Antioquia, this long poem traces the cycle of corn cultivation from preparation of the field to the gathering of the crop. It also contrasts the delicious dishes made of corn with the "vile potato." The poem's bucolic imagery reveals the author's romantic roots yet its homely details impart a realistic flavor, as does the use of local dialect by Gutiérrez, who said that he wrote in antioqueño, not in Spanish.
