Cantón, Wilberto (1925–1979)

Wilberto Cantón (b. 15 July 1925; d. 5 March 1979), Mexican dramatist. Cantón was a prominent, popular playwright who wrote more than two dozen plays. He also was a director, translator, critic, and journalist, holding such posts as head of the theater department of Mexico's National Institute of Fine Arts. He wrote two basic types of plays: those employing historical Mexican settings for dramatic action and those treating contemporary Mexican social problems. Outstanding works include El nocturno a Rosario (1956), Malditos (1958), and Nosotros somos Dios (1963). The theater at the General Society of Mexican Writers in Mexico City is named for him.
