tanist the heir apparent to a Celtic chief, typically the most vigorous adult of his kin, elected during the chief's lifetime. The word comes (in the mid 16th century) from Irish, Scottish Gaelic tánaiste, literally ‘second in excellence’.
tanist stone any of a number of large monoliths in Scotland, popularly supposed to mark the spot where tanists were elected.
