Stratton, battle of, 1643. Much of 1643 was devoted by king and Parliament to establishing local domination. In most areas, there were divided loyalties and towns to be made secure. Even in Cornwall and Devon, royalist strongholds, there was considerable support for Parliament. Hopton suffered an embarrassing ambush at the hands of James Chudleigh on Sourton Down, near Okehampton, on 25 April, but on 16 May caught Lord Stamford and Chudleigh at Stratton in Cornwall and defeated them heavily, taking Chudleigh prisoner.
