Sherston, battle of
Sherston, battle of, 1016. This was one of a series of encounters between Edmund Ironside and Cnut in the summer of 1016 and took place just west of Malmesbury. The Saxons were victorious but their advantage was soon cancelled by the disaster at Ashingdon.
