Hardknott
Hardknott was the Roman fort of Mediobogdum on the road over the Hardknott and Wrynose passes from the Lake District to Maryport on the coast. It was built in the reign of Hadrian and garrisoned by cohors IV Dalmatarum until its abandonment at the end of the 2nd cent. Constructed in stone, the fort contained the usual complement of buildings (many now on display) and to the east was a levelled parade-ground.
