Dunkeld, battle of, 1689. The death of their leader Dundee deprived the Jacobites of much of the advantage they had gained by the victory at Killiecrankie in July 1689. Mackay, leading the Williamite forces, was able to regroup. On 21 August, the Jacobites attacked a small force under Cleland at Dunkeld. Though Cleland was killed in action, his men repulsed the attack with such vigour that the Jacobite force was routed.
