technetium
technetium (symbol Tc) Silver-grey, radioactive, metallic element, one of the transition elements. It was the first element artificially produced, its name taken from the Greek tekhnetos meaning ‘artificial’. It was synthesized in 1937 by Italian physicist Carlo Perrier and Italian-born US physicist Emilio Segrè. Technetium is found in the fission products of uranium, and is present in some stars. It is used in radioactive tracer studies. There are 16 known isotopes. Properties: at.no. 43; r.a.m. 98.9062; r.d. 11.5; m.p. 2172°C (3942°F); b.p. 4877°C (8811°F); most stable isotope Tc99 (half-life 2.6 × 106 years).
