strong nuclear force
strong nuclear force One of four fundamental forces in nature. The strongest of these forces, it binds together protons and neutrons within the nucleus of an atom. Like the weak nuclear force, it operates at very short distances (a millionth of a millionth of a centimetre), and therefore occurs only within the nucleus. See also grand unified theory (GUT)
