Ortega (Saavedra), Daniel (1945– ) Nicaraguan statesman, president (1984–90). He joined the Sandinistas (FSLN) in 1963, rising to become its leader in 1966. In 1979, Ortega led the revolution that toppled the Somoza regime and formed a socialist government. In 1984, he was elected president. The Sandinista government was destabilised by the US-backed Contra rebels. In 1990 elections, Ortega was defeated by Violeta Chamorro. In 1996, he was defeated by Arnoldo Aleman.
