Gilbert, Sir W.S.
Gilbert, Sir W.S. ( William Schwenck) (1836–1911) English librettist and playwright. He collaborated with Sir Arthur Sullivan on an immensely successful series of 14 comic operettas, nearly all first performed by the D'Oyly Carte company. Their works include The Mikado (1855), HMS Pinafore (1878) and The Pirates of Penzance (1879).
